For Employees at Vest Advertising, Free Greens are the Pick of the Perks
As one of the rare employers who cover 100 percent of their employee’s healthcare costs, Vest Advertising in Louisville, Kentucky already places a high value on the health of its 28 employees. So when company leaders were looking for ways to make healthy habits easy for their employees, the answer was only natural—free weekly vegetable shipments to the office.
Vest belongs to a local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) through Grasshopper Distribution, grasshoppersdistribution.com, a cooperative of local farmers who provide shipments of their ripened crops May through November. The agency pays for the shipment of fresh vegetables each week. Employees then pick whatever they want from the week’s selection, which varies widely depending on the growing season. Selections range from spring mix lettuce, to new potatoes, blueberries, garlic, onions, squash and even more exotic offerings like edible herbs.

Larry Vest, co-founder of Vest AdvertisingAfter a day at work, it's tempting to hit the junk food, or just microwave a frozen meal. This program is great for getting people to try new things, and start healthier habits. When it's free, what's the risk? Now our employees are exchanging recipes and talking over their morning coffee about what they did with this week's haul. It's been a great team builder. And it doesn’t cost very much to do.
Sharon Adams, Vest Graphic DesignerEvery week is an adventure with this program. We never know what's coming next. Some weeks, we get rich greens like chard, or international vegetables like Bok Choy. Some weeks, we get items so exotic, we have to consult the CSA newsletter (links to pdf that I attached to the email I sent over with the finished release) to identify them. That's the best part...getting to try new things. My husband and I have had our own gardens for years. So it is terrific to see everyone coming to appreciate the taste of locally grown, organic produce. There's nothing else like it.
