Vest Officially Launches its One-Horse Records Digital Music Label with a Party for its First Act, The Howards
On Labor Day weekend, The Howards brought people back to the land with a “Farm Fresh” themed CD release party, starting at 5:30 p.m. September 5, at Endris Lodge in Clarksville, Indiana’s Lapping Park. Guests enjoyed a free buffet of farm-grown finger foods from Farm to Fork catering, shopped at an array of food booths from local growers, and heard a free concert from The Howards.
The concert marked the debut of One Horse Records, a digital music label and subsidiary of Vest. Run out of Vest’s digital media studio, the label offers local and regional musicians the opportunity to have their music professionally recorded and mixed, with no initial start up investment from them. One Horse sells the music digitally, and distributes it in stores such as Ear Xtacy, with artists paying the label back through a percentage of CD sales. All music is recorded and mixed by Joe Brown, Vest’s director of audio, and former owner of Radio Joe Productions in Louisville.
“We have tremendous resources here at Vest, and we thought it made sense to make use of them to bring affordable recording resources to good, local musicians,” said Cody Vest, director of One Horse Records. “This is no vanity press. We are a real digital label offering true resources for album design, distribution, and high quality studio editing. We’re only going to take on a few acts a year, and we intend to do right by them,” Vest said.

The Howards, who own Old Capital Farm (dairy goats) in Corydon, Ind., are passionate about promoting locally grown foods, American roots music and land conservation. “Molly and I didn’t grow up on farms. We chose this lifestyle. So we named our CD ‘Farm Fresh’ because the farming lifestyle really is fresh to us. I think it’s a dream a lot of people are having these days, as many of these old ideas about being close to the land are becoming new again,” said Cameron Howard.
The September 5th event was co-sponsored by the Clarksville Department of Parks.
