Christmas Ads
By Katie Earley, Copywriter
I’m a cryer. I cry easily over movies, books, TV shows, plays, and of course real-life events, both the sad and the happy. Holiday commercials also tend to get to me. No one won the Made Katie Cry Award this year, but two came close.
Hallmark holds the record for commercials that make me cry and this one hit close to home.
Jewelry commercials don’t normally do much for me, but this one does.
And a classic favorite that always makes me smile and I’ve sadly only seen once this season.

Totally agree. I liked those ads, too. Especially the jewelry ad. It’s a bit like emotional porn for women, though. The truth of the matter that most new families are spending so much on formula, lost wages, diapers, new baby wardrobes every three months, and chewy toys that their ability to buy that thousand dollar ring is a bit compromised. But it sure is a compelling fantasy.
But the one that makes me well up every time I see it is the tv ad from State Farm, with Michael Jackson’s childhood hit “I’ll be there” playing in the background. What a perfect illustration of what insurance truly does for you.
I also really like the holiday ads from Salvation Army last year, where the bell ringer’s bell was ringing, and you saw black and white footage of homeless and hopeless people with every ring. It was a searing reminder of what those bellringers are really doing every day.
You just gotta love Christmas! It gives us marketers such great platforms!
