What Would The (Ad) World Be Like With Music? Beautiful Music.
By Whitney Wright, Vest Media Buyer
From a previous post of mine, one would be able to see that my favorite commercials are those with some type of music. I didn’t realize that all of my favorite commercials had a common denominator except one. All of them were centralized around a very catchy, emotional or invigorating tune. I’m kind of a music junkie in real life and in my mind there aren’t musical genre boundaries. I love many different types of music and songs for many different reasons. Killer beat, lyrical genius, awesome riff, or guilty pleasure.
So it comes to no surprise that in my mind an effective commercial would incorporate some type of music. Sounds are good too. For example, a distinguished voice. There is a local hospital that uses the same woman’s voice in all of their commercials and I love it! Her voice is soothing and comforting. Like a warm blanket and chicken noodle soup. It makes me want to go there when I’m sick.
After my very rambled introduction, it is my pleasure to introduce the 5 Worst and 5 Best Ad Songs of All Time according to Billboard’s panel of experts. Agree to disagree? Hmmm.
THE FIVE WORST
#5 - AARP: “Everybody’s Happy Nowadays” - Buzzcocks

#2 - Royal Caribbean Cruise Line: “Lust for Life” - Iggy Pop
#1 - Victoria’s Secret: “Love Sick” - Bob Dylan
THE FIVE BEST

There were about three commercials on at the same time a year or so ago that had songs that I have since become obsessed.
My three recent commercial with song winners are:
1. Old Navy Sweaters/Ingrid Michaelson’s “The Way I Am” (Was almost the first dance at my wedding.)

2. iPod nano/Feist’s “1-2-3-4″

3. Apple MacBook Air/Yael Naim’s “New Soul”

Lots of happy indie chick rock…and Apple products.
